IF DRINKING IS YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION …

from The Courier -Mail, OPINION P.57 Jan 2, 2026

“THE SOBER REALITY OF WHY WE NEED TO LOSE THE BOOZE”

Paul Williams, Associate Professor of Politics and Journalism, Griffith University, commentator on Australian politics, media, and elections.

“There were fewer hangovers of Australians over 14 (77%) on January first this year than twenty years ago
(80%).

It’s a small but important decline for a nation founded on Rum.

Today, just 26% of Australians are ‘Excess’ drinkers, down from 39% in in 2007. ‘Daily’ drinkers have halved from 10% to 5% in the same period.

But your age and sex also say something about your drinking habits.

If you’re an older bloke, you’re still more likely to drink at dangerous levels. But despite Gen Z (born
between 1996- 2012) emerging as the ‘sober’ generation, almost 25% of all young women are now drinking
to excess.

A third of all Australians still drink at ‘risky’ levels.

According to National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines, anything over 10 standard drinks/week (4/day) is risky.

But World Health Organisation warns the only safe level of alcohol consumption is Zero / 0 / Nil / Nada / Nothing.

Cue the boozy naysayers who insist grog is part of the Australian way of life.”

Agree with it, argue against it; whichever side of the debate you’re on, when you’ve made up your mind, please look after yourself.

Or, as a bloke who rang Suzy from the pub recently, late on a Friday afternoon, said, “Can this hypnotherapy stuff fix me to stop drinking ?”
