Erickson’s bold exploration into the nature of hypnosis was both innovative and expansive. During this period, there was a great deal of progress in societal values, in the arts, and in science.

A metaphor Erickson often alluded to was that during his lifetime (1901–1980) man’s ability to fly progressed from the Kitty Hawk (1903) to men walking on the moon (1969).
When he made this statement to students, Erickson’s intent was for listeners to automatically engage in self-reflective orientation.

The strategic use of comments and circumstances to stimulate experiential inner search was part of the way Erickson taught hypnosis.

A hallmark of his long career as a psychiatrist was his ongoing inquiries, investigations, and communications about the potential of hypnosis to promote therapeutic change.

The methodology pioneered by Erickson was instrumental in the transformation of paradigms of clinical practice, helping to usher in new eras of both brief therapy and modern hypnosis.
